Astor Place is filled with restaurants serving Japanese comfort food. I go to Menkuitei for their grilled fish neck. Their ramen selection is good, too, plus you’ll deal with less of a crowd here. The house special is one of my favorites but I must say I find it hard to say no to the curry bowl.

Try Takahachi. Really, Really good fish. Chirashi + hamachi kama (what you got) + yakitori + tempura +… for all less than $30, and it’s great. Finally decent sushi in NYC. Also, around the corner try the Brick Lane Curry House. Their lamb chops are flavorful, not overcooked, and completely delicious. Wonderful website, still!
